How to install the "totally free"
Apple QuickTime VR file to see
360 Degree Virtual Reality Pictures

Beginning Users to Windows 95 with Netscape Navigator 3.0/3.01 or Internet Explorer
This is for people who have NEVER downloaded software off the Internet and installed it on their computer.
  1. Print these Instructions out if you have a printer. It will save you a lot of time and you will begin to enjoy this QuickTime VR and this web site a lot sooner. You should also bookmark this page using CTRL-D or using your mouse click the menu, "Bookmark" and then clicking "Add Bookmark".
  2. Make sure you have Netscape Navigator 3.0 or 3.01. If not, you can get it by clicking here, Netscape Navigator 3.x. Get the Netscape Navigator 3.01 Gold Standard with Components if Possible.
  3. Now goto Apple's QuickTime VR web page. WAIT!!!! DON'T CLICK!!! Please at least read the very next instruction first or you will be very, very confused and totally lost. You will be shown below where to click.
  4. On this page will be list of 3 different software file downloads. PICK the TOP software download called, "QuickTime 2.1.2 for Windows 95/NT Easy Install". It's about 2565 KBytes. The actual files you download is CALLED "qteasy32.exe". Apple seems to have added extra servers so the download should be fast.
  5. NOW, Goto Apple's QuickTime VR page by clicking here or read the next instruction to avoid confusion and click immediatly for the download.
  6. Next Click on the TOP software download option, "QuickTime 2.1.2 for Windows 95/NT Easy Install". Nevertheless if you just want to skip this confusion just click here, QuickTime 2.1.2 for Windows 95/NT Easy Install.
  7. Next a small window will pop up that is called, Save As. You should then WRITE down the name of the directory folder you saved it in. Next, CLICK the SAVE button at the bottom right of it. (If another window with 4 buttons opens up, CLICK the Save File button. After which a second window will pop up, and you can then just Click the "Save File" button.)
  8. After you have saved this file. You will return to the Netscape Window.
  9. You may exit out of Netscape Navigator if you wish or you may just go on to the next step below. (It's safer to exit Netscape, but I have done it without exiting.)
  10. Next, HIT the [CTRL]-[ESC] keys at the same time in order to bring up the Start menu.
  11. Goto the RUN menu.
  12. Type the directory name and the file name, for example, "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Program\qteasy32.exe". This example is usually the typical place where you saved your file if you didn't switch directories when installing Netscape or the Save As directory. (IF your computer says it CANNOT FIND this file you will have to HIT the [CTRL]-[ESC] keys again to bring up the Start Menu and then click the BROWSE button. You will then have to search for the file qteasy32.exe. Once you have found the file you can then click the OPEN button at the bottom right of the Browse window and then go to the simple instruction below.)
  13. CLICK the OK Button.
  14. Now, Quicktime Plug-In and the QuickTime VR component will be installed into the proper directories. Just follow whatever the Installation program tell you to do.
  15. Run Netscape Navigator again and use your bookmarks to find the Rose Manor web site. You can also type at "http://www.rosemanor.com" in the URL box at the top and then hit the [ENTER] key.

Helpful Notes if you are CONFUSED, especially if you started reading the Apple QuickTime pages.
(Updated as of May 14, 1997):

  1. It would really help if you have a Windows 95 operating system installed. Also install the 32-bit version of Netscape Navigator 3.0 or Internet Explorer. Please Pick Netscape Navigator 3.0 if you want to make it easy on yourself and avoid a lot of hassle.
  2. There is a difference between (1.) QuickTime and (2.) Quicktime VR. NOTICE!!! number (2.) has a "VR" attached to it. BIG difference!!!! There are two (2) sets of sites at Apple, the QuickTime web pages and the QuickTime VR web pages. See, one has the "VR" attached to it and the other doesn't.
  3. There is also another VERY BIG DIFFERENCE between the words, one, QuickTime and two, the Plug-In. These two words are not the same. When you read and see the word "QuickTime" on Apple's web site, it means the programs called, MPLAYER.EXE or PLAYER.EXE. SO, QUICKTIME does NOT mean the PLUGIN........one more time, the word QUICKTIME by itself is NOT-EQUAL to the PLUGIN. If it says both, "QuickTime PlugIn", then that means the PlugIn.
  4. If you decided to get Netscape Navigator 3.01 Gold Standard with Components, you will already have 1 out of the 3 parts needed to see Virtual Reality pictures. If you have Internet Explorer, I think you only have 1 out of the 3 parts needed , BUT, you will have to get the QuickTime EASY INSTALL. However, because of some updates at Apple, you should just download the top file, QuickTime 2.1.2 for Windows 95/NT Easy Install, on the QuickTime VR software page.
  5. If you have any problems please see Apple's QuickTime Installation FAQ page.
